From Johnson's New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World, 1863. A classic atlas from the mid-Civil War period from the United States, first edition 1860 (mainly Colton derived). The 1863 atlas in particular is unique for its amalgamation of earlier Browning and Colton engravings with newer maps holding a revised border design. The Johnson series of maps are known for their detail, rich hand-coloring, relation to the periods of Civil War and American Expansion in the West, and for their vividly American style of cartography.  Mapmaker A.J.
