The Vuillemin maps are famous from the period for their quality hand-coloring, extensive depiction of each province of france, attractive vingettes and engravings that accompany the maps, as well as the different fonts used for each province. France’s response to the Johnson and Mitchell maps of the mid-19th century.

Edme Mentelle (1730-1815) was an eminent French cartographer, and the geography teacher to the French explorer Baudin. Cape Mentelle in Western Australia is named after him. Although Mentelle did not have a large number of publications to his credit, he is credited with a considerable enhancement of knowledge in Australia, Southeast Asia, and North America specifically. Later works include collaborations with Conrad Malte-Brun. PF Tardieu is from the famous Tardieu cartography family, and served as engraver in this series.
