Edme Mentelle (1730-1815) was an eminent French cartographer, and the geography teacher to the French explorer Baudin. Cape Mentelle in Western Australia is named after him. Although Mentelle did not have a large number of publications to his credit, he is credited with a considerable enhancement of knowledge in Australia, Southeast Asia, and North America specifically. Later works include collaborations with Conrad Malte-Brun. PF Tardieu is from the famous Tardieu cartography family, and served as engraver in this series.
