Dufour’s Atlas Universel was one of the most important atlas series to be published in France during the 19th Century. Adolphe Hippolye (Auguste-Henri) Dufour was a student of Lapie, and a key member of France’s mid 19th-century cartography community.

Charles Francois Delamarche and his sons Felix and Alexander were three of the most important French mapmakers of the late 18th and early 19th century. Inheriting the mantle from Robert de Vaugondy and Bonne, The Delamarche faily served as the official mapmakers to French royalty and the later geographic society of the republic.

From Johnson’s New Illustrated Family Atlas of the World, 1863. A classic atlas from the mid-Civil War period from the United States, first edition 1860 (mainly Colton derived). The 1863 atlas in particular is unique for its amalgamation of earlier Browning and Colton engravings with newer maps holding a revised border design. The Johnson series of maps are known for their detail, rich hand-coloring, relation to the periods of Civil War and American Expansion in the West, and for their vividly American style of cartography.  Mapmaker A.J. Edme Mentelle (1730-1815) was an eminent French cartographer, and the geography teacher to the French explorer Baudin. Cape Mentelle in Western Australia is named after him. Although Mentelle did not have a large number of publications to his credit, he is credited with a considerable enhancement of knowledge in Australia, Southeast Asia, and North America specifically. Later works include collaborations with Conrad Malte-Brun. PF Tardieu is from the famous Tardieu cartography family, and served as engraver in this series.
