Dufour’s Atlas Universel was one of the most important atlas series to be published in France during the 19th Century. Adolphe Hippolye (Auguste-Henri) Dufour was a student of Lapie, and a key member of France’s mid 19th-century cartography community.

The 1863 atlas in particular is unique for its amalgamation of earlier Browning and Colton engravings with newer maps holding a revised border design.
